Commerzbank Corporates & Markets (CBCM) has appointed Dr Mehraj Mattoo as its new Global Head of Alternative Investment Strategies (AIS).
He will report to Willi Ufer, Global Head of Markets, and will be based in London.
AIS is the global alternative investments business division of Commerzbank based in London, New York and Frankfurt.
Dr Mattoo joins CBCM from Dresdner Kleinwort Wasserstein where he was Managing Director and the Global Head of Alternative Investments Group. He brings over 16 years of experience in the fields of structured derivatives, capital markets and alternative investments, has a successful track record of establishing new businesses, and is widely credited for popularising the use of fund derivatives in the late 90s.
Dr Matoo was at BNP Paribas from 1997 to 2001 where he pioneered the use of structured products on alternative investments, especially hedge funds. Prior to that, he worked for CIBC Financial Products as an Executive Director from 1995 to 1997 and Natwest Markets as a Director from 1989 to 1995. He has extensive global experience having worked in London, Hong Kong and Singapore.
Dr Mattoo received his MBA and PhD (Financial Economics) degrees from the University of London. A former NatWest research fellow at London University, he is a recipient of the Diploma of Imperial College (DIC) and the author of Structured Derivatives published by the Financial Times.
‘Alternative Investments have come to define our times like eurobonds defined the ’70s and derivatives the ’90s,’ says Willi Ufer. ‘CBCM is committed to being at the forefront of this exciting business and intends to fully benefit from the burgeoning growth in this sector. Mehraj’s appointment is a significant recognition of our commitment to be a market leader in alternative investments.’
Commenting on his new role Dr Mattoo says:: ‘Alternative investments will continue to dominate the investment scene and present new challenges and opportunities. We intend to be a leading player with global reach. Commerzbank has embraced a unique model to grow this business that will allow us to attract the best people in the industry and establish a strong franchise fairly quickly.’
