Indus Capital strengthens Japan presence with senior hire

Related Topics

Hedge fund Indus Capital Partners has named Makio Inui as its first Japan-based partner and head of the firm’s Tokyo office, underscoring its push to expand corporate engagement in one of Asia’s most active activist markets, according to a report by Bloomberg.

Inui, formerly of Soul Ventures, and previously a telecommunications analyst at UBS and Salomon Brothers, will oversee Indus’s Japan operations and report to Managing Partner Byron Gill and CEO Jim Shannon.

Founded in 2000 by Soros Fund Management alumni, Indus manages $4.6bn in assets, with its Japan-focused funds now accounting for roughly half of total AUM.

The appointment comes amid a wave of foreign investment firms strengthening their leadership teams in Japan. UBS and Apollo Global Management have both made senior local hires this year as global firms look to capitalise on renewed momentum in Japanese equities and shareholder activism.
