New Star Asset Management has announced the appointment from September of Donald Pepper as head of alternative investment. He is currently head of prime brokerage sales in Europe, the Middle East and Africa at Merrill Lynch International.
According to New Star, the appointment reflects the firm’s commitment to its alternative investment business. Pepper, who was active in prime brokerage sales at Goldman Sachs between 1987 and 2003, will head a dedicated hedge fund team of 10, oversee the company’s range of seven single and multi-manager hedge funds and seek to develop new business.
‘Donald is a welcome addition to the hedge fund team and demonstrates the importance we attach to the growth of this area of our business,’ says New Star chairman John Duffield, who founded the company in 2000. ‘His considerable experience will benefit the team and our investors.’
New Star’s existing range of seven hedge funds includes single-manager long/short equity funds as well as multi-manager and index products. The group, which employs more than 390 people at offices in London, Dublin, Bermuda, Madrid, Zurich, Milan and Hong Kong, had GBP21.7bn in total funds under management as of May 14.
