Point72 Chief Strategy Officer departs amid business expansion

Related Topics

James Malick, Chief Strategy Officer at Steve Cohen’s Point72 Asset Management, has exited the $41.5bn Stamford, Connecticut-based hedge fund, according to a report by Business Insider citing unnamed people familiar with the matter.

Malick, who joined the firm in 2023 from Millennium Management, was a member of Point72’s senior leadership team and played a key role in evaluating new business opportunities and leading strategic initiatives.

Before moving into hedge funds, Malick spent time at Boston Consulting Group, reflecting a broader trend among large, institutional hedge funds to recruit senior management talent from consulting firms and investment banks. He had also served as an adviser to the New York Mets, the Major League Baseball team owned by Cohen, a role he has now stepped away from.

The departure comes as Point72 continues to broaden its platform beyond its core multi-manager hedge fund business. In recent years, the firm has launched a private credit arm, an AI-focused investment fund known as Turion, and a new equities vertical, Valist, aimed at strengthening access to corporate leadership teams. Steve Cohen has also indicated that commodities could be a future area of expansion.

With more than 3,000 employees globally, Point72 has increasingly built out its non-investment leadership ranks, including hiring chief operating officer Gavin O’Connor from Goldman Sachs.
