Lawyers Addleshaw Goddard has expanded its City of London-based funds practice with the appointment of partner Christy Stagemeyer and consultant David Ive.

Stagemeyer joins from Bank of America in New York, where she was lead counsel for the alternative investments group and led on the creation or reconstruction of more than 250 private equity deals and hedge funds, ranging in size between USD10m and USD9bn. She was previously special counsel at Schulte Roth & Zabel.

Ive joins Addleshaw Goddard from Mayer Brown International, where he was a funds and tax partner specialising in leading edge structures. Stagemeyer and Ive join a core funds team of 12 including partners Philip Goodstone and John Hiscock. The team is currently servicing private equity and hedge fund clients and is becoming an increasingly significant player in the real estate funds market.

The appointments follow the recruitment last year of Matthew Doughty, who specialises in listed funds and recently led on Apollo’s USD2bn Euronext-listed vehicle, and Andrew Carpenter as head of private equity.

‘By strengthening our capability in this strategically important market, we will be able to enhance the depth of our service to existing clients and open up strategic new opportunities for our corporate practice as well as the wider firm,’ says corporate division managing partner Paul Devitt.

‘The recruitment of Christy and David expands Addleshaw’s offering in areas such as hedge and private equity fund formation and structured finance. It will have a direct impact on the firm’s existing practices, particularly our significant private equity and structured real estate, corporate finance and projects practices.

‘Christy is a leading practitioner in hedge funds and speaks regularly on issues affecting fund managers and fund formation. She has significant experience in Cayman and other structures that affect US and international investors.

‘David is a recognised authority in funds whose expertise covers property, private equity, cross-border infrastructure, hedge and authorised funds from both a tax and regulatory perspective. He also specialises in international corporate tax structuring, transfer pricing issues and double taxation treaty issues with a particular focus on US businesses wishing to establish a UK presence.’

Addleshaw Goddard’s funds practice is a key part of its corporate division, which comprises 41 partners, 23 of whom are based in London, and more than 100 other fee earners. In addition to its funds and structured real estate group, the division offers significant experience in mergers and acquisitions, IPOs (main market and Aim), joint ventures, reconstruction and other forms of equity and debt financing. The practice also has a strong reputation in private equity, with excellent relationships with many of the UK’s leading private equity houses.
