Maitland to open Cayman office headed by former Walkers partner

Maitland, an international provider of legal and financial services. has announced the impending launch of a new office in the Cayman Islands on September 1 and the appointment of former Walkers partner Sara Collins to head the operation, bringing to 12 the number of Maitland offices worldwide.

Collins will establish a Cayman presence for Maitland, offering legal services initially with the intention of growing the business to offer private client, investment funds and trust and corporate services and building the Cayman team over the coming months.

Maitland also plans to establish a fund services business in Cayman, providing a local point of contact for investment funds administered from the group’s back-office operation in Cape Town. ??

The firm says its expansion into Cayman has been driven by demand from both private and corporate international clients. It notes that the islands remain the leading offshore jurisdiction for hedge fund formation and administration, offshore private equity structures and private and commercial trusts.

According to Maitland, the Cayman industry has demonstrated its robustness in the face of recent global economic stress, with setting new monthly records for fund registration. In addition, the jurisdiction has a reputation for high-quality dispute resolution, another area of strength for the firm.

Collins was admitted to the bar in 1994 and has more than 13 years experience as a leading litigation and contentious trusts practitioner in Cayman. After joining Walkers in 1995 she became head of the trusts disputes group and managing partner of the commercial disputes group, sharing responsibility for Walkers’ litigation teams in Cayman, the British Virgin Islands and Jersey. She became a partner in 2006.
