Structured Portfolio Management, an asset management firm focusing on fixed income, has hired Vishal Bhutani as a managing director to trade within the SPM Opportunity fund.

SPM Opportunity will invest in SPM Core - SPM's group of flagship funds specialising in relative value MBS strategies - and in opportunistic, short to mid term strategies across capital structures. This will expand SPM's ability to take advantage of market anomalies.

'SPM has an outstanding track record of fully understanding the particulars of the assets in which we invest and executing trades accordingly,' says Donald Brownstein, chief executive of SPM.  'Vishal's considerable experience will add to and complement the existing team of talented portfolio and risk managers who have contributed significantly to SPM's growth.'

Bhutani says: 'SPM's well-deserved reputation for excellence has set a very high standard over a long period of time. I'm looking forward to working with the entire SPM team and contributing to their achievements'

Bhutani, 34, joins SPM from Alexandra Investment Management, where he was a portfolio manager from 2002 to 2008. At Alexandra, he was responsible for managing the firm's event-driven credit portfolios. While there, he also supervised and helped build the firm's research department. In 2006, Bhutani opened Alexandra's office in Mumbai, India, where he developed a specialty in Asian investment research. Previously, he was a vice president at Magten Asset Management, a fund focused on distressed investing.
