Funds lawyer Stephen Ross is to join Sidley Austin as a partner and will co-head the firm’s London investment funds group, part of the firm’s global investment funds practice.
Ross (pictured) will join Sidley from his position as group general counsel of London-based Man Group, the world’s second largest hedge fund manager. Before arriving at Man in 2004, Ross was co-head of the private funds group of a Magic Circle law firm.
“Stephen is well-known and respected in asset management circles, and will be a great addition to our existing team of funds lawyers,” says Bruce Gardner, co-head of the London investment funds group. “I look forward to working with Stephen says to the value Stephen will add, not only to our practice in London but overall to our internationally recognised global asset management practice.”
Ross brings to Sidley a deep knowledge of the business of asset management. During his 10-year tenure with Man, he held several key leadership positions. He was a member of Man’s executive board throughout his entire time there and held a number of senior roles, including global head of product structuring & financing and head of product operations. He became Man’s first general counsel in 2007. In 2010, after Man acquired GLG, a multi-strategy global investment manager, Ross also took over responsibility for Man’s regulation/compliance function and was appointed chairman of the firm-wide risk committee.
“We are delighted Stephen has decided to join Sidley,” says George Petrow, managing partner of the firm’s European region. “Given his broad experience at Man, Stephen will bring to our clients a specialised knowledge of the asset management business that very few lawyers in private practice have.”
“I am delighted to be joining Sidley,” says Ross. “The firm has a real depth of expertise and credibility internationally in my practice area, and this creates the ideal platform for my return to private practice. I am excited at the prospect of providing clients with the benefit of my mix of private practice and in-house experience.”
