Managed Funds Association (MFA), a trade association for the global hedge fund industry, has appointed Mark Epley as Executive Vice President & Managing Director, General Counsel, effective 19 February 2019.

Epley (pictured), will join MFA from the Office of the Speaker of the US House of Representatives, where he serves as senior advisor and general counsel.

“Mark has earned a distinguished reputation as a skilled lawyer and advisor with a deep understanding of Washington and matters important to our members. His expertise will help advance our efforts to keep in place policies that work well, fine tune those that do not, and ensure new initiatives recognise the unique nature of investment firms,” says Richard H Baker, MFA President and CEO. “We are thrilled that Mark will join our remarkable team, including the talented lawyers in our Legal Department, who work tirelessly for our members and the investors they serve.”

As MFA’s chief legal officer, Epley will report directly to Baker and oversee all legal aspects of the Association, including regulatory and legal matters related to MFA policy initiatives.

In senior positions in Congress and in the Departments of Justice and Defense, Epley has helped lead large organisations and initiatives, advised the House Speaker and cabinet secretaries, managed a high-profile litigation portfolio and led complex congressional investigations. Prior to joining the Speaker’s office in 2015, Epley served as general counsel to the US House of Representatives Committee on Ways and Means and staff director for its Subcommittee on Oversight, where he was a subject matter expert on tax administration. He has also served as staff director on the House Committee on Financial Services’ Subcommittee on Oversight examining the implementation of the Dodd-Frank Act.

He received Bachelor of Arts from Gordon College and a Juris Doctorate from the William and Mary School of Law. His bar admissions include Washington DC and Virginia.
