Regulatory consultancy Iron Road Partners has hired James “Jim” McGovern as managing director, adding a former US Securities and Exchange Commission enforcement official with extensive experience running compliance functions at hedge fund managers.
McGovern joins after nine years in the SEC’s Division of Enforcement, where he ultimately served as an assistant director in the Asset Management Unit, the agency’s specialist enforcement group covering the investment management industry.
He subsequently moved into senior legal and compliance roles at several hedge fund firms, most recently serving as general counsel and chief compliance officer at Candlestick Capital Management.
McGovern previously held the same senior legal and compliance responsibilities at Mason Capital Management and was chief compliance officer at Hutchin Hill Capital.
Iron Road said the appointment strengthens two areas of its business: its roster of former senior SEC officials and its expertise advising hedge funds.
The firm’s leadership includes former regulators and senior compliance executives from the asset management industry. McGovern’s combination of enforcement experience and first-hand experience as a hedge fund CCO is expected to bolster its advice to managers dealing with increasingly complex regulatory requirements.
McGovern holds a JD from Boston College Law School and a BA from Boston College. He began his legal career in the litigation department of Stroock & Stroock & Lavan.
