New York-based asset management firm Malbec Partners, a subsidiary of BNP Paribas, has recruited two experienced investment teams for its recently-launched alternative investment platform.

Bill Geisler, who once ran the emerging markets strategy of ill-fated hedge fund manager Amaranth Advisors, has been hired as a portfolio manager to head the Malbec emerging markets strategy team along with Lars Pedersen, a senior research strategist.
The Malbec Partners quantitative multistrategy team will be headed by portfolio managers Ryan Sheftel, previously a director at Citadel Investment Group, David Horowitz, a managing director, portfolio manager and head of credit research at Morgan Stanley Investment Management, and Ian McDonald, a managing director and head of macro strategies at Goldman Sachs. Both teams will report to Malbec president and chief executive Jeffrey Trongone.
Malbec Partners was launched in response to what the firm perceived as a growing need for alternative strategies that operate within a disciplined institutional platform.

Geisler was previously managing director and global head of Lehman Brothers’ emerging markets fixed income business. Pedersen, a former senior research analyst and strategist for emerging markets at Amaranth, also joins the emerging markets team as a senior research analyst and strategist.
He was previously a senior economist at the international capital markets department of the International Monetary Fund and chief strategist for the hedge fund coverage group at Lehman Brothers.
Sheftel, Horowitz and McDonald have extensive experience in global fixed income markets. Sheftel was previously a director in global rates at Citadel Investment Group, which he joined in 2002 from Goldman Sachs. Horowitz was a managing director and portfolio manager at Morgan Stanley Investment Management, and McDonald is the former head of macro strategies at Goldman Sachs.
