Early indications from Australia’s absolute return and hedge fund sector performance for April are showing promising signs, with average performance up 3.52 per cent, according to Australian Fund Monitors.

Best performances based on results to date have been equity based funds which are up 4.91 per cent, reflecting the continuing sharp rally in local and overseas equities.

As might be expected, equity long managers are leading the tables to date, up 7.20 per cent, followed closely by equity long/short on 5.63 per cent.

At the other end of the scale the star performances of the past 12 months, global macro, market neutral and managed futures have struggled based on performances received to date.

Of the funds reporting, 76 per cent had a positive month, with the best performances again coming from equity based managers who have struggled during the sharp sell-off of 2008.
