Citadel’s Griffin buys neighbouring apartment at 740 Park Avenue for $38m

Citadel founder Ken Griffin has purchased a duplex apartment next to one of his existing New York properties for $38m, continuing his expansion of a global luxury real estate portfolio that already spans several major cities, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal.

The property is at 740 Park Avenue, one of Manhattan’s most prestigious pre-war co-operative buildings, known for housing some of the city’s wealthiest residents over the past century. The building was developed in the early 20th century and has long been regarded as one of New York’s most exclusive residential addresses.

Details of the seller have not been disclosed. The apartment had previously changed hands in 2019 for just over $20, accmording to records, and was listed several years earlier at a lower price point before undergoing limited publicly known alterations.

The duplex spans approximately 7,500 square feet and includes five bedrooms, along with multiple living spaces such as a library, formal dining room and private elevator access. The residence also features traditional pre-war design elements including high ceilings, wood-burning fireplaces and an unusually large number of windows and storage spaces.

740 Park Avenue remains one of Manhattan’s most sought-after co-operative buildings despite broader cooling in the ultra-prime residential market. It has historically attracted prominent business figures and high-net-worth individuals, including members of the Lauder family.

The purchase adds to Griffin’s extensive real estate holdings, which include high-value properties in New York, London, Florida and the Hamptons. His previous acquisitions include a nearby Manhattan penthouse purchased for hundreds of millions of dollars, as well as a London residence close to Buckingham Palace and multiple luxury estates in Florida.
