Dan Avery, a former managing director at Goldman Sachs known for his expertise in delta one trading, has joined Balyasny Asset Management (BAM) as a Portfolio Manager and is already building a specialised team at the firms London office, according to a report by eFinancial careers.
Avery’s team currently includes Max Witcher, a delta one trader from LMR Partners, and Chris Donaghey, who joined from JPMorgan as a Sub-Portfolio Manager. Both were onboarded in September. Avery is reportedly looking to add three to five analysts as he scales the team further.
Avery’s hiring efforts signal BAM’s commitment to expanding its delta one capabilities, aligning with its strategy to allocate significant capital to high-performing managers.
Avery, now 35, rose to prominence when he became a Goldman Sachs managing director at just 28 in 2015. He departed Goldman for Millennium in 2020 and managed an estimated $1bn there before resigning in March 2024. Sources suggest Avery’s mandate at BAM will involve managing a similar-sized allocation.
Neither Avery nor BAM has commented on his move.
