Investment management business Fidante has acquired a minority stake in Latigo, a fund manager specialising in event-driven investing. As part of the transaction, the Life division of Fidante’s parent company, Challenger Limited, has made an investment in Latigo’s funds.   Founded in 2005 by David Ford (pictured), and David Sabath, Latigo has focused on building a unique offering in event-driven investing. Latigo’s strategies include distressed securities, special situations and long/short credit and equity investing.   Partnering with Latigo is consistent with Fidante’s strategy of expanding alternatives offerings. Cboe Global Markets has announced the settlement of the March expiry Cboe bitcoin (XBT) futures, the third contract settlement conducted since its launch in December. The settlement price was USD8,236.11, as determined by the 4:00 pm ET Gemini1 Exchange bitcoin auction.   Cboe bitcoin futures, the first regulated futures of their kind, launched on 10 December 2017. More than 418,000 contracts have traded across expiries since the launch, representing a notional value of over USD4.6 billion. The hedge fund industry overall had a negative month for returns in February losing 2.01 per cent, according to eVestment’s latest Hedge Fund Performance report, with managed futures funds producing their largest monthly loss in over 20 years, down 7.03 per cent. Among primary markets, Broad Financial Derivative funds also racked up big losses in February at -6.27 per cent, bringing YTD 2018 returns to -2.43 per cent.   In terms of regional exposure, Africa/Middle East focused hedge funds were standouts in February, returning 1.93 per cent, bringing YTD performance for these funds to +7.11 per cent.   North America
Hehmeyer Trading + Investments has launched the Hehmeyer Cryptocurrency Index Fund, a new product that will provide certain qualified investors with access to the cryptocurrency market by investing in a fund that aims to track the performance of the proprietary Hehmeyer Cryptocurrency Index (HCI). Launching as a commodity pool for qualified eligible persons and accredited investors, the fund will be managed by Hehmeyer Capital Management, a commodity pool operator registered with the Commodity Futures Trading Commission and a member of the National Futures Association. The flash estimate for the Barclay CTA Index, compiled by BarclayHedge, indicates a 2.89 per cent loss in February. The gross return of the SS&C GlobeOp Hedge Fund Performance Index in February 2018 measured -0.88 per cent. The average return of the global hedge fund industry was pulled into negative territory in February as markets experienced sharp reversals, with trend following CTA/managed futures and long/short equities strategies lagging behind the pack.
