The real estate funds industry is alive and well from an asset raising perspective. In 2012, private RE funds closed with USD72 billion in committed institutional assets. By 2014, that number had increased by 45 per cent, according to leading alternative asset data provider, Preqin.
While this is encouraging, the reality is that for most RE managers, the playing field has become extremely competitive as more players enter the arena to compete for a share of the assets.

Hedge funds moved into health care stocks and shifted out of info tech stocks in Q2, according to S&P Capital IQ’s latest quarterly hedge fund tracker.
Health care drove the bulk of hedge fund buying for the second straight quarter, with net buys of USD7.2 billion, up from USD4.8 billion in Q1. The sector now constitutes 26 per cent of the holdings for ten largest hedge funds.

The Credit Suisse Hedge Fund Index up 0.87 per in July with eight of the ten sub-strategies recording positive performance for the month.
Managed Futures led the way with a return of 4.33 per cent, followed by Dedicated Short Bias (3.88 per cent), Long/Short Equity (1.52 per cent), and Global Macro (1.26 per cent).
The other positive performers for the month were Multi-Strategy (1.00 per cent), Equity Market Neutral (0.56 per cent), Fixed Income Arbitrage (0.30 per cent) and Event Driven 0.18 per cent).

The Board of Global Derivatives Indices Limited (GDI), the index and product development arm of GMEX Group, has established an Index Oversight Committee in order to oversee the compilation methodology and production of indices published by GDI.
The Committee has complete autonomy independent of the day to day activities of GMEX Group.


The Committee has been established in accordance with the IOSCO Principles for Financial Benchmarks and is responsible for ensuring that they are applied to GDI’s activity. GDI already publishes the IRS Constant Maturity Index (CMI), which tracks the 2 -30 year tenors of the interest rate yield curve
The Cayman Islands is confident that the pan-European marketing ‘passport’ will be extended to alternative investment funds (AIFs) set up in the jurisdiction, according to the Alternative Investment Management Association (AIMA).
Cayman, where a high percentage of offshore hedge funds are registered, still awaits assessment by the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA). It was not included in the initial assessments which saw ESMA recommend the passport for Jersey, Guernsey and Switzerland under the Alternative Investment Fund Managers Directive (AIFMD).
But AIMA said that Cayman was well-placed to have a successful review in the near future.

Euro money market funds' (MMFs) assets under management (AUM) hit their lowest level in twelve months in the second quarter of 2015 and registered a drop of 21 per cent to EUR54 billion.
GBP- and USD-denominated MMFs also experienced a fall in AUM in Q2, albeit to a lesser extent, with a 6.4 per cent and 5 per cent decrease, respectively.

With most investors believing that small-sized and mid-market buyout funds currently present the best opportunities in private equity, this article from Preqin Private Equity Spotlight, August 2015, examines whether the size of a buyout fund has any significant impact on returns.
According to Preqin’s latest investor survey, carried out in June 2015, over half of LPs (51 per cent) surveyed see small-sized and mid-market buyout funds as currently presenting the best opportunities in private equity.
