After a slight loss in June the Ucits HFS Index returned a positive result in July 2010.
Although up by only 0.35 per cent, it is a noteworthy result as during the first three weeks of the month the broad index was negative.
After the first week of trading with nearly every strategy in the red the Ucits HFS Index was down by 0.46 per cent. The second week added a positive 0.41 per cent to the overall performance just to lose another 0.19 per cent in the third week of trading.

Apex Fund Services, a fund administration business, has opened its Luxembourg office.
Apex will begin providing administration services from Europe’s largest fund domicile.
The Luxembourg office opens with ten Ucits and regulated SIF Sicav funds.
In addition to offering services for all types of public and private Luxembourg funds, the Luxembourg office has also been appointed as fund administrator for three fund platforms. These are:
1. Luxembourg Fund Partners Platform for the re-domiciliation of offshore funds, alternative investment fund manager activities and the set-up of non-Ucits vehicles;
2. Amiri Shariah Equities Platform, a plug and play solution for establishing a Luxembourg Shariah
The Luxembourg government has approved the draft bill implementing Ucits IV into national law.
The final adoption of the draft bill by parliament is expected to take place before the end of this year.

Martin Currie, the active equity manager, intends to launch three Ucits III-compliant absolute alpha funds.
These launches are subject to regulatory approval, with the funds expected to be available to retail and institutional investors from October 2010.
The three strategies to be launched are Japan Absolute Alpha, European Absolute Alpha and Global Resources Absolute Alpha.
All three are based on existing hedge funds and will be managed by the same teams. These will be Luxembourg-domiciled Sicav funds with sterling, euro and dollar share classes. The minimum investment will for each fund will be USD10,000.
