Hasley Investment Management targets caravan parks with “best ideas” fund

A sub-fund to the Elite Hasley Investment Funds OEIC, the Elite Hasley Best Ideas Portfolio, is to be launched by Hasley Investment Management.

The Best Ideas Portfolio will target funds with the most attractive risk reward characteristics within asset classes where the prospects appear favourable. Investments may include hedge products, onshore absolute return, credit, high conviction equities and leisure investments such as caravan parks.

The Best Ideas Portfolio is the latest addition to the range managed by Hasley Investment Management, the multi-manager boutique. Because of the esoteric nature of some of the investments, Hasley is positioning the fund at the higher end of the risk spectrum and targeting it at investors and their advisers who specifically do not want a traditional equity/bond/property/cash portfolio.

The Best Ideas Portfolio will be launched on 2 February.

‘Following the horrendous market conditions of 2008, when the returns of all asset classes became correlated as markets fell, we have sought to minimize exposure in the Best Ideas Portfolio to asset classes such as equities, whose returns are particularly unpredictable and volatile,’ says the fund’s manager Roderick Collins.

‘We are likely to employ some of the onshore absolute return funds, which performed well during 2008, as well as some of the large quoted single manager hedge funds. The wide spreads on credits provide a further theme, of which we will take advantage. We plan to have holdings in life policies and some less usual investments such as a fund investing in caravan parks. There may be a minimal holding in high conviction equities.

‘We aim to construct a portfolio along lines employed by the more enlightened institutional investors but not yet widely available to private clients.’

Way Fund Managers is the authorised corporate director for the new fund.

Chief executive David Pook says: ‘The existing Multi-Strategy and Diversifier Portfolios have seen very good levels of investment in spite of the economic climate since Way took over as authorised corporate director in September 2008.’

Both the Elite Hasley Multi-Strategy Portfolio and the Elite Hasley Diversifier Portfolio are available on the Skandia wrap platform.

‘At Skandia we strive to offer advisers and investors a wide range of investment options to enable our clients to make investment decisions that suit their specific needs and goals,’ says head of investment marketing Graham Bentley.
