Hedge funds posted mixed performance in January, as fears of contagion related to the coronavirus drove global equity market volatility into month-end. The HFRI Fund Weighted Composite Index posted a narrow decline of -0.19 per cent for January, with declines in Equity Hedge and Event-Driven only partially offset by gains in Macro and Relative Value Arbitrage strategies, according to data released today by HFR.

European software investor Hg is to acquire stakes from Keensight Capital and Pléiade Venture in smartTrade Technologies (“smartTrade”), a specialist in multi-asset electronic trading solutions, headquartered in Aix-en-Provence, France. A total volume of 10.1 TWh was traded in EEX’s intraday power markets in January 2020, a 46 per cent increase year on year. The Austrian, Belgian, German continuous, French, GB continuous and Dutch spot markets all registered record volumes, which made it possible to pass the 10 TWh mark for the first time.
The power derivatives markets reported a double-digit growth with the Hungarian market doubling its volumes to 16.1 TWh and French futures increasing by 92 per cent.

Cowen has entered into an agreement to cooperate with Global Prime Partners (GPP) to transition GPP’s International Prime Brokerage business to Cowen. Cowen and GPP will work together to implement this transition efficiently and with a commitment to best serve GPP’s clients and personnel, as well as maintain the level of services current GPP clients have come to expect.
