With so much bandwidth being absorbed by the gravitational pull of Brexit, hedge fund managers could be forgiven for paying short shrift to the Senior Managers and Certification Regime (SM&CR), which formally comes into effect on 9 December 2019.  Set to replace the existing UK Approved Persons Regime (APR), it is a relatively straightforward regulation, intellectually speaking, and nowhere near as daunting as the 7,000 page tome of MiFID II, but even so managers are advised not to leave it too late to ensure senior managers have been properly trained and made aware of their roles and responsibilities.  A recent

Nursey joins from Standard Chartered Bank, where he was Head of FX Options Trading in Asia since 2012. Independent specialist asset manager, Unigestion, has completed its migration from on-premise to a cloud-based model, on SimCorp Dimension. Unigestion’s migration addresses the operational burden faced by many buy-side institutions, as they seek more flexibility, scalability and elasticity within their investment operations.   Unigestion is the first client to migrate from on-premise to SimCorp’s delivery model, chosen by 20 buy-side institutions around the world. The asset manager will now more efficiently consume and manage SimCorp Dimension, with access to a suite of SimCorp managed services, via cloud technology. The implementation sees Unigestion utilise the full service stack of SimCorp Dimension.  
As part of a proof of concept, SIX is working with the SNB to explore technological options to make digital central bank money available for the trading and settlement of tokenised assets between financial market participants. Tradeweb Markets has significantly expanded its portfolio trading functionality for corporate bonds, enhancing access to competitive liquidity globally. Portfolio trading at Tradeweb improves execution efficiency by allowing institutions to package multiple bonds into a single basket, negotiate a portfolio level price with liquidity providers including banks and principal trading firms, and execute in a single transaction. Financial services provider Apex Group has appointed Renaud Oury as Group Chief Data Officer (CDO) and as a member of the Executive Committee. The creation of this role strengthens Apex’s position as an industry leader and reflects its commitment to building a data driven organisation.      Oury’s, whose appointment is effective immediately, is based in Luxembourg, one of Apex’s largest service centres, and as CDO he will be responsible for developing and managing a comprehensive analytics strategy for the Group. BCS Global Markets (BCS GM) has appointed Alexey Bachurin as the firm’s new Head of equity trading. Bachurin will be based in London, reporting to co-heads of Global Equities Luis Saenz and Oleg Achkasov. As part of his new role, Bachurin will be responsible for equities execution with an emphasis on global markets. As Head of equity trading, Alexey will also oversee all BCS GM’s Equities Trading departments.   With more than 20 years’ experience in the financial sector, Bachurin joins BGS GM having held senior management positions within equity trading at the likes of IFC Metropol, Metallinvestbank and Renaissance
A new study by the law firm Seward & Kissel of the hedge fund industry’s use of side letters – special agreements between hedge funds and their investors – shows a marked decrease in the share of side letters issued to funds of funds. The study also revealed that most-favoured-nation clauses continue to be the most commonly used term in side letters.   The Seward & Kissel 2018/19 Hedge Fund Side Letter Study, indicates that funds of funds received just 37 per cent of all side letters.
