The Credit Suisse Liquid Alternative Beta Index (CSLAB), which aims to reflect the performance of the overall hedge fund industry, finished up 1.38% in July.  The Long/Short Equity strategy was the strongest performer for the month and year-to-date, finishing up 4.65% in July and 5.61% year-to-date. The US Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) has issued an order requiring Morgan Stanley & Co to pay a USD300,000 civil monetary penalty for failing to hold sufficient US Dollars in segregated accounts in the United States to meet all of its US Dollar obligations to cleared swaps customers.  The Order also finds that the firm failed to implement adequate procedures and requires Morgan Stanley to cease and desist from violating CFTC Regulations, as charged. Institutional asset owners recorded a median gain of 0.2 per cent in Q2, according to Northern Trust Universe data. This marks a drop from the 4 per cent median gain in the second quarter last year and 2.3 per cent median gain in the previous quarter. The Northern Trust Universe tracks the performance of about 300 large US institutional investment plans, with a combined asset value of approximately USD899 billion, which subscribe to performance measurement services as part of Northern Trust’s asset servicing offerings. There was a noteworthy divergence of returns among plan types in the second quarter of 2015.
Kintore, the new investment system based on gold from Insch has seen a return of 11.5 per cent in its first month of trading client capital.   Insch Kintore is entirely algorithmic and the company says that ‘for reasons of performance and topicality, we expect this coverage to intensify’.   The company also points out that during its first month most gold funds, ETFs and miners suffered heavy losses.   Insch Kintore trades gold as a base ‘currency’ against six other currencies (USD, AUD, JPY, EUR, CHF and GBP).   The firm writes: “The idea of treating a commodity as
