Sprott has appointed Trey Reik, a 33-year veteran of the investment management business, as Senior Portfolio Manager and Precious Metal Strategist.
Reik has dedicated the past 13 years to precious-metal investing and, since 2009, has served as Managing Member of Bristol Investment Partners LLC, a registered investment advisor focused exclusively on the sector. Reik has written extensively on precious metals markets and monetary policy and is a recognised public speaker on these topics. At Sprott, Reik's responsibilities will include the development and management of institutional precious metal-focused investment vehicles, primarily in the United States.

Amid the rapid growth of the hedge fund industry and the complex regulatory climate following the financial crisis, hedge fund managers and institutional investors have differing views on transparency and independent controls, according to a new survey by Northern Trust.
An overwhelming majority of managers (90 per cent) believe that all or nearly all of their investors are satisfied with the level of transparency they receive. However, about half (55 per cent) of investors say they seek higher levels of transparency than they currently receive.

The hedge fund industry produced an aggregate return of positive 1.93% in February, the industry’s best monthly performance since February of last year, according to eVestment’s latest Hedge Fund Performance report.
The primary driver of hedge fund returns in February were rising equity markets, highlighted by the S&P 500’s best month in more than three years.
Every major hedge fund strategy posted positive returns for the month of February, with activist funds leading the industry and managed futures lagging, but still positive. February’s returns erased any remnants of January’s losses from primary strategies.

Professionals at equity hedge funds earned significantly more in 2014 than peers in credit hedge funds and asset management, according to the latest compensation report from Kea Consultants.
Base salaries for junior professionals grew by a marginal 5% at most funds and varied little across asset management and equity/credit hedge funds, with mean base ranging from GBP67.5k to GBP75k for analysts with two to four years of experience, and peaking at a GBP200k even for more senior VP/Principals with eight to ten years of experience. Managed futures traders were down 0.07% in February according to the Barclay CTA Index compiled by BarclayHedge. The Index remains up 3.02% year to date.
“For eight of the past ten months, CTAs were able to generate returns from trends that provided ample profit opportunities,” says Sol Waksman, founder and president of BarclayHedge.
“But in February, intra-month reversals in fixed income and commodity markets provided a more difficult backdrop for momentum strategies.”
Only two of Barclay’s eight CTA indices had gains in February. The Financial/Metals Traders Index was up 0.53%, while the Currency Traders Index rose 0.01%.
