Most funds were up last week, with CTAs significantly outperforming, according to Lyxor. Long term CTAs were up an impressive four per cent last week (10 per cent YTD), and are now the best strategy in 2014 by a wide margin.   They are generating performance from almost all asset classes, capitalising on their long exposures on equities and the USD, and short on commodities. Gains were especially generated on short Euro and Japanese Yen on FX, and short energy and precious metals on commodities.

All the Newedge managed futures indices posted positive returns for the third consecutive month in October, extending the positive performance in 2014 YTD. Trend-following strategies continue to drive returns, with the Newedge Trend Index returning +1.76 per cent for the month.    The Newedge Trend Indicator also posted another positive month, showing +1.83 per cent for October, bringing 2014 YTD performance to +20.29 per cent.   Data from the Newedge Trend Indicator shows that both the bond and currency sectors were the main drivers of portfolio performance in October, with bonds contributing +2.70 per cent and currencies +1.69 per cent.
Over 200 Canadian hedge fund and financial services professionals and supporters gathered at the Spoke Club in Toronto on 4 November for the 11th annual "Open Your Hearts to the Children Gala". The special fundraising evening organised by Hedge Funds Care/Help for Children Canada (HFCC) raised nearly CAD200,000 for the prevention and treatment of child abuse. This brings the amount the annual event has raised to date to more than CAD1.7 million. The number of alternative and multi-asset fund launches have increased 15 per cent since 2010, according to research from Cerulli Associates. "The market crisis was highly disruptive, temporarily halting new product introductions as budgets were slashed, but in the longer term it triggered creative disruption," says Cindy Zarker, director at Cerulli. A new joint programme between the Shanghai Stock Exchange (SSE) and the Hong Kong Stock Exchange (HKEx) will allow non-resident investors to invest in Chinese companies whose shares are listed on the SSE and denominated in Renminbi only, so-called "China A-shares", without having to apply for a status as a Qualified Foreign Institutional Investor (QFII) or Renminbi Qualified Foreign Institutional Investor (RQFII). The London Metal Exchange (LME) has launched two market-wide consultations concerning enhancements to its physical delivery network and to the LME Warehouse Agreement. “We are pleased to be able to issue these two consultations following our recent success in the judicial review appeal.
