The number of hedge funds trading Puerto Rico (PR) bonds is increasing, although exposure to specific credits has become bifurcated by whether they support or oppose the new Public Corporation Debt and Enforcement Recovery Act, according to a report from Fitch Ratings.
Fitch estimates there are now over 60 alternative fund managers holding more than USD16 billion of the island's debt in aggregate.
Some of these fund managers support the Recovery Act in order to ring-fence commonwealth obligations from PR public corporations while others are suing to annul it.

Marc Lim has joined tax firm WTAS as a managing director in the commercial and alternative investment funds practices in the San Francisco office.
Prior to joining WTAS, Lim spent nine years as a tax practitioner in Japan and was a partner at Zeirishi-Hojin PricewaterhouseCoopers in Tokyo.
A Bay Area native, Lim spent six years prior to Tokyo servicing technology clients as an international tax practitioner at both PricewaterhouseCoopers and Arthur Andersen in San Jose, California.

BlackRock has launched the BlackRock Multi-Manager Alternative Strategies Fund, offering individual investors the opportunity to access multiple alternative investment strategies in a single open-end mutual fund.
The investment objective of the fund is to seek total return.
The fund extends BlackRock's alternative mutual fund platform to seven funds.
The fund leverages the industry knowledge of BlackRock Alternative Advisors (BAA), BlackRock's hedge fund solutions platform.

All managed futures indices calculated by Newedge reported negative performance in July, although the Newedge CTA Index remains in positive territory for the year at +0.14 per cent year-to-date, a decline of 0.91 per cent over the month.
Trend followers had a difficult July, bringing the Newedge Trend Index down to -1.06 per cent, increasing the negative performance of the year to -1.76 per cent.
Performance attribution data from the market-based Newedge Trend Indicator shows that the positive performance achieved during the first part of July was offset by losses at the end of the month.

The gross return of the SS&C GlobeOp Hedge Fund Performance Index for July 2014 measured -0.37 per cent.
Hedge fund flows as measured by the SS&C GlobeOp Capital Movement Index advanced 0.62 per cent in August.

The National Futures Association (NFA) has revoked the registration of Joel W Himel of Vernon Hills, Illinois, a floor trader at the Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT).
A designated sub-committee of NFA's membership committee issued the final order revoking registration because Himel has failed to respond to allegations from NFA. Himel was notified of the charges on 27 May when NFA issued a notice of intent to revoke registration.
