F-Squared Investments has exceeded USD10bn in assets under management or model manager agreements as of 4 January 2013, up from approximately USD5.6bn in the previous year.  2012 marked the second year in a row that the firm’s assets grew by more than USD4bn, with growth coming across all business segments.  F-Squared’s growth has been fuelled by strong demand for the firm’s AlphaSector suite of solutions, which provide investors with upside participation plus embedded downside risk management. FRM Capital Advisors (FCA), the seeding division of Man Group’s fund of hedge funds operation FRM, is to make a significant investment in a new Japan-focused hedge fund launched by Hong Kong-based investment adviser Arena Capital Management. Arena, which was established by chief investment officer Toby Bartlett – ex-Citadel and Highbridge Capital Management – in May 2012, manages a Japanese long/short equity strategy with a focus on domestic demand stocks, and constructed with a factor neutral pair trading book. BNY Mellon has been recognised as the world’s largest fund of hedge fund (FoHF) administrator in a bi-annual administrator survey. BNY Mellon saw its FoHF assets under administration rise by USD20bn to USD130.6bn in the six months to October 2012, demonstrating considerable growth in what has been a challenging period for the FoHF industry, with overall assets under management down by two per cent, falling from USD1.09trn to USD1.07trn. Petri Jylhä’s DSc doctoral dissertation "Essays on the Economics of Hedge Funds" at the Aalto University School of Business has been awarded the first prize in the OP-Pohjola Group Research Foundation Doctoral Thesis competition. The award is worth EUR10,000. The doctoral dissertation consists of four essays that examine hedge funds from various perspectives. Hedge funds refer to funds which often involve high risks and seek to increase their returns in all market conditions. The Securities and Exchange Commission has charged a former executive at New York-based broker-dealer Jefferies & Co with defrauding investors while selling mortgage-backed securities (MBS) in the wake of the financial crisis so he could generate additional revenue for his firm. Overall alternative Ucits strategies delivered solid performances in 2012, but managed futures struggled to keep up, according to the Q4 Alceda Quarterly Ucits review from Alceda Fund Management. The top performer of 2012 was the Equity Long Short Index which delivered 6.19 per cent growth over the year.   Tracking the Absolute Hedge Global Ucits Index, the Alceda Ucits review revealed the sector had another positive quarter, with the Index advancing 0.8 per cent to bring total yearly gains to 3.02 per cent. Carey Olsen is an offshore law firm with offices in the Cayman Islands, Guernsey, Jersey and London. Hempel and Boyd provides BVI legal services from its offices in the BVI and Cape Town, South Africa.
