Investors should consider the frequency of Google searches for particular keywords when analysing movements in the stock market. This is one of the key practical recommendations of a new report from researchers at Essex Business School at the University of Essex and Norwich Business School at the University of East Anglia which has been published in the Journal of Banking and Finance.
The researchers analysed a unique dataset of Google search frequencies for keywords related to 30 of the largest stocks traded on the New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ. They were able for the first time to examine the
Hedge fund flows as measured by the GlobeOp Capital Movement Index advanced 0.35% in April.
"Outflows tend to be seasonally higher at quarter ends as investors rebalance their portfolios," says Hans Hufschmid (pictured), chief executive officer, GlobeOp Financial Services (LSE:GO.). "Despite this, net flows for April were slightly positive."
The GlobeOp Capital Movement Index represents the monthly net of hedge fund subscriptions and redemptions administered by GlobeOp. This monthly net is divided by the total assets under administration (AuA) for GlobeOp’s fund administration clients.

FTSE Group is to licence futures and options based on the FTSE 100 Index to the National Stock Exchange of India. The licensing agreement will see the exchange launching the new product on 3 May, following recent regulatory approval granted by the Indian regulator.
For the first time, Indian investors will gain access to the UK equity market through new rupee-denominated derivative contracts based on one of FTSE’s headline indices. The new contracts will be tradable by all equity derivatives members of the NSE through existing infrastructure, with no additional investment required.

Northern Trust’s hedge fund administration unit, Northern Trust Hedge Fund Services LLC, has built significant momentum since the unit was formed by the acquisition of Omnium LLC in July 2011.
In the last seven months, NTHFS has secured 22 client wins on four continents. With the economy and the market showing ongoing signs of improvement, business optimism among investment managers is extremely high according to a poll by SEI (NASDAQ: SEIC).
The poll, conducted at a recent event for the company’s investment manager clients, shows that a majority of participants (78 per cent) are optimistic about their firms’ business prospects over the next three years, while nearly all of those polled (86 per cent) believe investor confidence levels are higher today than in the aftermath of the financial crisis. KB Associates, a consulting firm to the asset management community, has appointed Andrew Ritchie as an Executive Director.
Ritchie joins KB Associates’ London office where he will be responsible for advising asset managers on the structuring of investment funds, as well as providing managers with advice on a range of compliance, operational and governance issues. In particular he will focus on advising those managers who wish to establish UCITS funds or regulated hedge funds.

The Securities and Exchange Commission has charged Goldman, Sachs & Co over a lack of adequate policies and procedures to address the risk that during weekly “huddles,” the firm’s analysts could share material, nonpublic information about upcoming research changes.
Huddles were a practice where Goldman’s stock research analysts met to provide their best trading ideas to firm traders and later passed them on to a select group of top clients.
Goldman has agreed to settle the charges and will pay a USD22 million penalty.
Goldman also agreed to be censured, to be subject to a cease-and-desist order, and to review
Man Group plc (‘Man’), the global alternative investment manager has appointed Ravi Chari as co-Head of Foreign Exchange at AHL, its systematic managed futures manager.
Chari has a 12-year career in systematic trading at hedge funds. He joins Man from IKOS Asset Management, where he headed the group’s Futures and FX funds. Prior to joining IKOS in January 2010, Chari was a Portfolio Manager at Millennium Partners, running FX strategies. He spent five years with DKR Capital before joining Millennium and prior to that he was at Caxton Associates for two years.

President Obama on 5 April, 2012 signed into law the Jumpstart Our Business Startups Act (JOBS Act), which seeks to eliminate certain restrictions on capital formation and to encourage economic growth in the United States by “improving access to the public capital markets for emerging growth companies,” a new category of issuers created by the Act.
