The Credit Suisse LAB Index was up 1.71% in February according to Dr Jordan Drachman (pictured), Head of Research for Alternative Beta Strategies at Credit Suisse.
Dr Drachman says: "The Credit Suisse Liquid Alternative Beta Index (CSLAB), which aims to reflect the performance of the overall hedge fund industry, finished up 1.71% in February. Each of the five sectors posted positive performance. Long/Short and Event Driven were the strongest performers for a second month, gaining 2.25% and 2.16% respectively. Meanwhile, Merger Arbitrage was the lowest performing strategy, up 0.13% for the month."
More than USD0.5 trillion of European leveraged buy-out loans are due to mature between now and 2016, according to a new report form global law firm Linklaters.
Within this headline figure the report identifies which countries and sectors are most acutely affected and will face the greatest pressures. From a country perspective these include UK (USD172bn), France (USD86bn) and Germany (USD83bn) which have the largest requirements.
The largest sectoral burden falls on the telecommunications sector where USD67bn of LBO loans must be refinanced over the five years to 2016. The next four largest sectors are retail (USD47bn), healthcare (USD40bn), chemicals (USD37bn)
The Dow Jones Credit Suisse Core Hedge Fund Index closed up 1.31% in February as all of the index component strategies reported positive results for February.
The top performing strategy was Convertible Arbitrage (2.34%), followed by Long/Short Equity (2.05%) and Emerging Markets (1.83%). The worst performers were Fixed Income Arbitrage (0.43%) and Managed Futures (0.69%).

Mark Proctor has joined Vinson & Elkins’ (V&E) Private Investment Funds practice as a partner in New York. His practice will focus on structuring, forming, and operating private investment funds, as well as advising private funds in connection with their investment activities.
Proctor will also advise clients on investments in private funds, and represent buyers and sellers in secondary transactions involving private fund interests.
He joins a group of five V&E partners in New York and Texas who have an extensive practice representing investment funds as well as investors in private funds.

Private funds specialist Timothy W Mungovan has joined Proskauer as a Partner in the firm’s Boston office. Mungovan was the founder and leader of the Private Fund Disputes team and was formerly the Practice Group Leader of the Commercial Litigation and Financial Services and Securities Litigation Practice Groups at Nixon Peabody.

New figures for the Guernsey funds sector show there is no room for complacency, according to Peter Niven (pictured), Chief Executive of Guernsey Finance – the promotional agency for the Island’s finance industry.
Statistics from the regulator, the Guernsey Financial Services Commission (GFSC), show that the net asset value of funds under management and administration in Guernsey decreased by GBP10.2 billion (3.7%) during the final quarter of last year.
