SEI has signed ten new collective investment trust managers over the past eight months. According to Cerulli Associates, CITs represented about USD733bn in employer-sponsored retirement plans, including defined benefit and defined contribution plan assets as of 30 June 2009. Global consulting firm Watson Wyatt has promoted Damien Loveday to global head of hedge fund research, taking on the role from Craig Baker, who also leads the wider global manager research team. Multi-jurisdictional law firm Conyers Dill & Pearman has hired Guy Cooper to its corporate practice in Bermuda as part of a spate of new hires to the firm. Cooper (pictured) will focus on company and commercial work, with specialist expertise in the formation of companies and partnerships, joint ventures, restructuring and finance transactions. The South African hedge fund industry remained stable through the recent market turbulence with assets under management of ZAR29.7bn at 30 June 2009 – just two per cent lower than the previous year’s ZAR30.3bn, according to a survey by Novare Investments. Even though the industry recorded its first year of net outflows in the 12 months to June 2009, the total size of industry outflows (including estimated outflows as a result of funds dissolved) netted against inflows amounted to an approximate ZAR3.3bn, less than 11 per cent of the industry size a year ago. The Association of Investment Companies says the proposed Alternative Investment Fund Managers Directive fails to take account of the benefits the investment company structure provides for shareholders.  In its written evidence to the House of Lords European Union Committee inquiry into the directive, the AIC says the proposals would create unnecessary and duplicating regulatory objectives, increase costs and reduce investment companies’ commercial flexibility.   According to the AIC, the directive fails to recognise the role of the independent board.  It says this should be resolved by ensuring that the rules do not create regulatory obligations which conflict with the investment
The Lyxor Hedge Fund Index rose 1.14 per cent in September, bringing year-to-date performance to +5.40 per cent. The top performing strategies over the month were L/S credit arbitrage (+5.15 per cent), convertible bonds and volatility arbitrage (+2.59 per cent), and equity long bias (+2.19 per cent). Just three strategies posted a negative performance in September: L/S equity short bias (-4.21 per cent), distressed securities (-0.72 per cent) and L/S equity market neutral (-0.08 per cent). The international derivatives exchange Eurex is launching an equity index future based on the MSCI Japan on 26 October 2009.
