After flying high in July as global markets traded in a consolidation mode, the Credit Suisse/Tremont Broad Hedge Fund Index eased in August—returning a positive 1.53 per cent—for a sixth consecutive month of positive returns, according to Lipper Tass.
Over August all hedge fund strategies except dedicated short bias posted positive performance.
Consolidating the positive trend since the beginning of the year, the best performing hedge fund strategy for the third month in a row was convertible arbitrage, returning a solid 3.39 per cent, while the worst performing strategy was dedicated short bias at minus 1.69 per cent.

Equinoxe Alternative Investment Services, a provider of administration services to the hedge fund industry, is to expand its Irish operation with the establishment of a new asset servicing operation in Sligo.
The operation will employ over 50 people over three years, with the potential for further growth as it develops.
Supported by government through IDA Ireland, it will initially locate at The Innovation Centre at the Institute of Technology Sligo.
Equinoxe’s existing Irish operation – Equinoxe AIS Ireland – located in Malahide, County Dublin, is the company’s European headquarters servicing the EMEA markets.

FRM Capital Advisors, the seeding division of Financial Risk Management, has entered its first strategic relationship with an Asian hedge fund.
FCA will make a significant investment in the first fund to be launched by Isometric Capital Management, owned and managed by Sanjiv Bhatia, the former head of Deephaven Capital Management’s Asia office.
The fund will use a fundamental research strategy to identify investment opportunities in Asian companies where it can identify a catalyst which will drive investment returns. The fund will invest predominantly in equities although positions will range across the capital structure.

Instinet, a provider of electronic trading and agency-only brokerage services, has launched BLX, an algo-friendly dark pool for US equities that builds block trades by combining the liquidity aggregation benefits of point-in-time crossing with the flexibility of a continuous market.
BLX, which has been operating in a soft launch mode, recorded an average trade size of 15,719 shares in September 2009.
With BLX, Instinet aims to restore block-trading in the fragmented US equity market, as the platform aggregates multiple orders from both buy- and sell-side participants and consolidates them into block-size trades.

Yorkville Advisors, the US based investment manager to a family of funds, has executed a SGD10m equity line facility with Advanced Integrated Manufacturing.
Under the terms of the facility, AIM may issue ordinary shares to Yorkville in tranches based on certain criteria at any time over a 36 month period for up to a total of SGD10m.
The investment was sourced out of Hong Kong and made by YA Global Master SPV, a Yorkville affiliated fund.
