Odey Asset Management is among a number of hedge fund firms that have cut back on bets against Baillie Gifford’s Scottish Mortgage Investment Trust after a large fall in its share price, according to a report by the Financial Times.
The report cites an investor update from James Hanbury, who runs Brook Absolute Return and Developed Markets at Odey, as revealing that the fund had pared back its short positions in the £13.4 billion, London-listed investment trust, despite ongoing concerns over board governance and exposure to risky private companies.

ExodusPoint Capital Management, a $13 billion hedge fund with offices in London, Paris, Dubai and Singapore, has appointed Evangelos Makris as an analyst from JPMorgan, where he was a senior associate for three years, according to a report by Financial News.
Makris joined JP Morgan as an associate in 2019 before being promoted to senior associate in November 2021, having begun his career at Tokyo-headquartered Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group.
Makris’ appointment follows those of fellow analyst June Sun who joined ExodusPoint earlier this month from Bank of America (BofA) and former Citi rates trader Hao Qu, who joined the firm
South African retail investors are increasingly including hedge funds in their investment portfolios as they look to mitigate the effects of ongoing market volatility and high inflation, according to a report by News24.
The report cites figures from the Association of Savings and Investments South Africa (ASISA) as revealing that the country’s hedge fund sector enjoyed “unprecedented” growth of 30% over the past year, attracting ZAR5.33 billion of new money during 2022, including ZARR4.19 billion from individual or retail investors.
