Professional investors are forecasting a surge in commodities trading over the next 12 months as the so-called commodity supercycle takes effect, new global research from blockchain-based derivatives trading platform CloseCross shows.
Its research among professional investors around the world responsible for around $380 billion in assets under management, found 84 per cent expect the level of trading in commodities to increase in the year ahead with 29 per cent forecasting a substantial increase.
A key driver is that 81 per cent of them believe markets are entering a commodity supercycle where commodities trade above their long-term price trend for decades-long periods,
The latest edition of the AIMA Hedge Fund Confidence Index (HFCI) – a global index that measures confidence hedge funds have in the economic prospects over the next 12 months – reveals that the average measure of confidence has risen to +19.5, up from an average of +18.4 in Q1.
Based on a survey of more than 300 hedge funds accounting for approximately USD1 trillion in assets, respondents are asked to choose from a range of -50 to +50, where +50 indicates the highest possible level of economic confidence over the next 12 months.

Derivatives marketplace CME Group has reported its Q2 and June 2021 market statistics, showing it reached average daily volume (ADV) of 18.4 million contracts for both the second quarter and the month of June.
According to CME Group’s latest figures, overall ADV increased 5 per cent, while interest rate futures and options volume rose by 25 per cent, including: Record SOFR futures ADV of 118K, an increase of more than 200 per cent, and a 19 per cent increase in interest rate options.
CME Group also saw record bitcoin futures and options ADV of 26,575 contracts, as well as record
