Hedge funds betting against Sainsbury’s have taken a dent after the UK supermarket giant’s share price rose this week on the back of strong Q1 sales numbers, prompting the FTSE 100-listed firm to revise its profit outlook upwards.
A number of well-known hedge funds – including BlackRock, Marshall Wace and Citadel – have built negative wagers against Sainsbury’s lately, while the likes of Pelham Capital and Third Point continue to hold longer-standing bearish bets, according to regulatory disclosures made to the FCA.

Digital assets hedge fund BKCoin Capital has named Mark Treinkman as head of quantitative trading.
Treinkman was most recently at Pattern Capital Management, where he had been a software developer, portfolio manager, quantitative trader, and financial advisor focusing on small businesses, high net-worth individuals and independent RIAs.
He began his career in equities at Madison Proprietary Trading Group, before joining Chimera Securities as an equity trader, where he later shifted focus to quantitative approaches to trading capital markets.

Quantumrock, the German volatility-focused quantitative hedge fund manager, has seen returns soar in the first half of the year, with its flagship fund generating more than 36 per cent in the first half of 2020 following an eye-catching June gain of almost 10 per cent.
The Munich-based firm’s Volatility Special Opportunities Program (VSOP), which uses an equity futures-and-treasuries model built around AI trading throughout the market cycle, advanced 9.87 per cent last month, to bring its year-to-date showing to 36.16 per cent.

Quantology Capital Management, a Paris-based systematic long/short equity-focused hedge fund firm, has launched a new strategy, Quantology US Equity.
The new fund aims to outperform the Nasdaq 100 Index, described by Quantology as “the best performer and the hardest index to outperform over the last 10 years.”
The launch comes as the firm’s Quantology Absolute Return strategy ended the first half of 2021 in negative territory, down just over 1 per cent having lost 0.5 per cent in June.
