Peter Thiel’s Macro hedge fund has acquired a roughly $76m position in Argentine oil producer Vista, giving the billionaire’s hedge fund a 1% holding in one of the key operators in the country’s Vaca Muerta shale basin, according to a report by Reuters.
The report cites a US Securities and Exchange Commission filing as showing that the fund bought approximately 1.2 million American Depositary Shares in Vista, representing around 1% of the company’s outstanding capital.
The investment adds a significant Argentine energy exposure to a portfolio that includes technology, electricity and broader energy-related businesses.
Thiel, the billionaire venture capitalist and co-founder of Palantir, has taken a growing interest in Argentina and has met President Javier Milei. The pair held talks at Argentina’s presidential palace in April, discussing economic policy and Milei’s opposition to wealth taxes.
Local media have also reported that Thiel recently purchased a property in an affluent Buenos Aires neighbourhood.
The SEC filing showed Thiel Macro had a portfolio worth approximately $418.7m, with other disclosed holdings including Amazon, Vistra and a range of US power companies.
Those energy investments include American Electric Power, DTE Energy, FirstEnergy, CMS Energy and nuclear-energy company X-Energy, highlighting a broader focus on power and energy infrastructure alongside technology.
