Pioneer Alternative Investments has confirmed the appointment of Lucio Vignati to the new position of senior equities trader in the European long/short team managed by Riccardo Cavo, head of European long/short strategies.

According to Pioneer, Vignati will help manage the asset growth of the business by optimising trading activity and contributing to the cross-fertilisation of ideas to maximise the team’s alpha generation capabilities.

‘We have always had a focus on high-quality execution of trading strategies,’ says Luca Mengoni, chief investment officer of the single manager division at Pioneer Alternative Investments. ‘Now with the increase in assets we have experienced, and the expectation for continued strong growth, it is the right time to create a dedicated focus on this activity.’

During his career, Vignati has gained experience on the buy and sell side, having worked for primary institutions on both sides. He joins Pioneer from Lehman Brothers where he was director of European equity sales trading for almost three years, having previously spent four years with JP Morgan Securities in European sales trading.

Pioneer Investments, which has investment centres in Dublin, Boston and Singapore, had a total of EUR203.6bn in assets under management at the end of January in mutual funds and structured products on behalf of clients that include institutions, corporations, intermediaries and private investors worldwide. Part of Italy’s UniCredito Group, Pioneer employs a total of more than 2,300 staff in some 25 countries.

The group’s hedge fund business, Pioneer Alternative Investments, had total assets under management of EUR6.2bn in single strategy funds and funds of hedge funds at the end of January. The business has its main operations in London, Milan and New York and its investment centre in Dublin.
