Zurich-based Signina Capital, a specialist in structured asset management, has expanded its investment management team with the addition of Rick Pearson.

Pearson will be responsible for trading a specialist short-term interest rate strategy for institutional clients at Signina Capital.

Prior to joining the firm on 1 February, Pearson has been successfully trading a short-term interest rate Spezialfonds since November 2006. Despite difficult market conditions he returned 24 per cent between launch in November 2006 and December 2008. He brings with him a USD78m account and a junior trader.

Pearson began his career with Salomon Brothers in London and New York. Over a 16-year trading career he has held senior trading positions at financial firms including Nikko, hedge fund manager Maple Partner, Fimat and Man Financial.

Martin Kloeck, partner at Signina Capital, says: ‘The short-term interest rate strategy Rick manages is of great interest to our clients having delivered a proven track record of consistent performance – despite the hugely turbulent markets we have experienced in 2008. Importantly for our clients, the short-term interest rate strategy is highly liquid, transparent and 100 per cent independently valued’.

Signina wants to grow the strategy to USD400-450m targeting institutional investors and private clients.

Pearson manages the strategy using a combination of systematic market analysis to identify where short term expectations are at extremes, fail to reflect the fundamentals in the respective economies or where curve shapes differ from the respective likely path of rates. His relative value plays then filter out market noise and he trades independent of market direction.

Signina Capital is a financial service provider focussing on structured asset management.

The company develops investment solutions using modern financial instruments and quantitative models, allowing clients to improve the risk-return profiles of their investments.

Signina Capital concentrates on absolute return strategies using funds of hedge funds, single hedge funds as well as theme-based investments.
