Macro hedge fund major Brevan Howard Asset Management has hired gas specialist Robert Alpen as the firm looks to build out its commodity trading team after an absence of almost a decade from the market, according to a report by Bloomberg.
The report cites unnamed people with knowledge of the matter in revealing that Alpen, who most recently led European gas trading at Engelhart Commodities Trading Partners, is that latest addition to the firm as part of a $750m push into commodities headed by Elycia Sherman.
Alpen started his career at RBS Sempra, before helping build out Gunvor Group’s natural gas, and then becoming Head of Trading at Switzerland-based MET International.
Brevan Howard was last active in commodities in 2014, when it closed its commodity fund amid a wider exit of firms from the sector at the time.
