eVestment expands stock ownership report to include Germany, Japan and other markets

eVestment, a specialist in institutional data and analytics, has expanded its popular quarterly institutional stock ownership report to include stock holdings information for companies based in the United Kingdom, Germany and Japan, in addition to the list highlighting the most widely held stocks globally.

The most recent report, based on data from eVestment’s Holdings Analysis solution, shows that US-based firms Microsoft, Google parent company Alphabet and Apple, in that order, are the top three most widely owned stocks globally in the institutional investment business. Several international firms also made the global top 20 list, including Royal Dutch Shell, Alibaba, Taiwan Semiconductor and Tencent.
 
Looking at stocks of companies based in the new markets highlighted in the report show the top stocks in the most recent quarter and movement of those stocks up and down in percentage of portfolio inclusion, compared to Q2 2018 and Q3 of last year.
 
The top five UK-based companies owned by institutional investors in Q3 were, in order, Diageo, BP, GlaxoSmithKline, British American Tobacco and AstraZeneca. The top five German firms owned by institutional investors were last quarter were, in order, SAP, Bayer, Allianz, Siemens and BASF. The top five Japanese firms owned by institutional investors in Q3 were, in order, Sony, Nippon Telegraph and Telephone, Keyence Corp., Sumitomo Mitsui Finance Group and Orix Corp.
 
Among firms based in emerging markets countries, the top five stocks owned by institutional investors in Q3, in order, were Alibaba, Taiwan Semiconductor, Tencent, Samsung and Baidu. Among this group, these five companies held the top spots in the same order in Q2 2018 and the same spots in Q3 2017, although in that quarter Taiwan Semiconductor held the No. 1 spot and Alibaba held the No. 2 spot.
