MFA General Counsel to step down

Managed Funds Association today announced that after ten years of service as the Managed Future Association’s (MFA) General Counsel, Stuart Kaswell is to step down later this summer.

Working with MFA Members and staff, Kaswell has helped shape the US and EU legal frameworks that govern the alternative investment industry today.
“The past ten years brought about sweeping change for our industry – including new regulations, greater transparency, and improved risk management. Getting here required a deep understanding of financial services law, credibility with policymakers, long hours, and the patience of Job. Enter Stuart Kaswell,” says MFA President and CEO Richard H Baker (pictured). “In the fall of 2008, during the height of the financial crisis, Stuart joined our effort to be a constructive advocate for MFA Member firms. From then until now, I have relied on his counsel and leadership to build MFA into the effective force for sensible regulation that it is today. His efforts, and those of his team, have had a meaningful impact on MFA Member firms and our industry. I am immensely grateful for his many contributions and wish him well in any future endeavours.”
During the financial crisis and subsequent reform efforts, Kaswell led a team of talented lawyers to promote public policies and practices that foster fair, efficient, and transparent capital markets. His efforts in the U.S. and Europe have helped position MFA as the authoritative source of industry information and expertise. MFA’s annual Legal and Compliance Conference – now a must-attend event for legal and compliance officers in the alternative investment industry – is one of his enduring legacies.
“I came to MFA to help create a workable regulatory framework for the hedge fund industry in the US and the EU. That work is largely complete,” Kaswell says. “It has been a great honour to work at MFA with so many talented people. I thank the Board and Richard Baker for this opportunity and my expert colleagues on the MFA staff. I particularly want to thank the members of the Legal Team for their great work and friendship.”
