Monsoon Capital, the US-based hedge fund founded in 2004, saw its USD15million managed futures fund, Monsoon Asia Pacific Systematic Program, deliver an excellent +17.5 per cent last month reported Reuters this week. The fund uses systematic trading models to trade index futures in eight regional markets and has now delivered +51.5 per cent since it launched last November. Understandably, the firm is banking on this level of performance to help attract new assets after seeing its assets tank 90 per cent to USD150million following the financial crisis. “The quant approach is the way we are trying to revive the fortunes of the firm,” Monsoon’s founder and senior managing director, Gautam Prakash, was quoted as saying. Today, the firm now manages USD400million, including USD55million in another India-focused quant fund. “August provided a smooth downtrend that the fund was able to take advantage of by going short,” said Prakash. He expects the firm to grow its assets back up to 2008 levels over the next four years, with the quant fund making up 50 per cent of the total. The Asia Pacific fund has an AUM capacity of USD2billion.
