Morgan Dale Capital, a newly-formed London-based global investment management company, is in the process of launching the Morgan Dale Network Intelligence Fund to invest in emerging market opportunities.
The fund will generate investment ideas from a network of on-the-ground consultants and intelligence-gatherers based throughout the emerging world.
Morgan Dale claims that because the fund does not rely on traditional sources of information, such as brokers and analysts, it will be able to identify value before it is obvious and to enter and exit opportunities ahead of the crowd.
The intelligence network set up by Morgan Dale is based on similar networks organised by Kroll, the largest business intelligence company in the world.
The firm’s founders are Chris Morgan Jones, head of intelligence and managing partner, who was formerly head of the consulting group in Europe, the Middle East and Africa for Kroll; Ashley Dale, chief executive and managing partner, formerly partner at the emerging market fund GLS Capital and head of sales for the UK and Europe for Asian-focused investment bank CLSA; and Alistair Candlish, chief investment officer and partner, formerly a partner and portfolio manager at Bluecrest Capital Management.
‘The principal driver of a successful hedge fund is ideas,’ Morgan Jones says. ‘The business network that we’ve set up vastly expands and streamlines the idea-generation process and allows us to identify opportunities independent of our peer group.
‘This is particularly important in emerging markets, where financial reporting, oversight and regulatory systems are underdeveloped and there are many opportunities for an information edge.’
Adds Dale: ‘The fund will aggregate the information provided by the intelligence network, then apply a rigorous investment process to exploit opportunities where we feel we have an edge.
‘All four principals in Morgan Dale have extensive experience in emerging markets – together, over 50 years’ worth – and have jointly identified the shortcomings in the information that flows toward managers in this sector. This fund is our solution to the intelligence problem.’
