US-dollar, euro and sterling prime money market funds (MMFs) have increased their sensitivity to interest rates in the first two months of 2014, meaning their stressed net asset values have deteriorated, according to Moody’s. In US domiciled funds, aggregate exposure to European financial institutions rose to approximately 31 per cent of total investments at the end of February from 25 per cent at year-end 2013.   Some of this increase came while reducing exposures to Australian and Japanese financial institutions, whose share of invested assets declined to 16.5 per cent from 18 per cent.   Partially due to the higher
Institutional investors view activism as a successful tool used among hedge fund managers to increase returns and stimulate growth in their investments, according to a survey by Novus. Hedge funds received USD24.3bn (1.1 per cent of assets) in February, the highest monthly inflow in three years, building on an inflow of USD4.4bn (0.2 per cent of assets) in January, according to BarclayHedge and TrimTabs. “The hedge fund industry raked in USD28.7bn in January and February, an 83 per cent jump from USD15.7bn in the same period last year,” says Sol Waksman, president and founder of BarclayHedge.   Industry assets climbed to a five and a half year high of USD2.2trn in February, according to estimates based on data from 3,374 funds. FTSE TMX Global Debt Capital Markets has acquired the indices business of MTS, whose indices track the performance of the largest and most widely traded government issued securities in European bonds. The United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit has ruled in favour of the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE) in a seven-year-old patent litigation with the International Securities Exchange (ISE). The Commodity Futures Trading Commission’s division of market oversight has issued the results of a rule enforcement review of OneChicago.  The division found specific areas where OneChicago should improve its trade practice programme.    Among other items, the division recommended that OneChicago take steps to ensure that its compliance surveillance department is adequately staffed to meet OneChicago’s self-regulatory responsibilities.   The division also recommended that OneChicago significantly increase the frequency and number of spot checks of exchange of future for physical and block transactions that it conducts annually.    The division had no recommendations with respect to the exchange’s automated
