Asia’s budding hedge-fund industry is springing to life, attracting the most money this year since pre-global financial crisis and beating returns in the US and Europe. Net inflows of USD14.4 billion in the nine months ended Sept. 30 have brought total assets under management in Asia to USD140.8 billion, according to data provider Eurekahedge Pte. Ltd. Asia’s hedge-fund industry is closer to the peak of USD176 billion reached in 2007 than it has ever been in the last five years, a reflection of growing confidence in the region’s hedge-fund managers and the prospect of high returns as economic growth in Asia
The US Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) has announced an anticipated publication schedule for reports delayed by the recent US government shutdown.  The CFTC will begin issuing its weekly Commitments of Traders (COT) reports on a rolling basis as soon as they are ready – with the first report being published on 25 October. If not for the shutdown, this report would have been published on 4 October.    The CFTC expects to release two more of the delayed COT reports during the week of 28 October and at least two more of the delayed COT reports during the week
By James Williams – Seemingly overnight fund administrators have had to deal with the complexities of enhanced regulation at a level never before seen in the industry. In Europe, this has taken root in the form of the AIFM Directive, introduced this July. Next year, swap regulation under EMIR will follow the lead of the Dodd-Frank Act in the US. On the horizon looms FATCA, a potentially huge operational burden for administrators who will need to automate their investor onboarding process, not to mention the current need to support managers’ Form PF filings to the SEC.   At the heart of
Abacus Group, a provider of hosted IT solutions for hedge funds and private equity funds, has opened an office in Dallas to help support a growing client base in that market. Abacus Group’s expansion, which included the addition of 57 new funds this year, was prompted by increased demand in the Dallas market from new and existing fund managers. While an improved economic environment in 2013 has contributed to new fund launches, heightened regulatory pressure on the business has prompted funds to seek more cost efficient business technology models that meet new requirements.   Changes imposed under Dodd-Frank have set
To successfully execute on complex trading strategies and to stay in compliance, a firm must know the exact time that events happen, such as ticks, trades and computed correlations. If a time stamp is off, it could be the difference between a successful trade and a debilitating business challenge.   For the last four years, FSMLabs has provided financial trading firms with software and hardware for high-precision time synchronisation and distribution to prevent intentional and accidental time errors, manage compliance, and guard against malicious attacks. However, a large number of financial firms still do not recognise how easily time can
Hedge funds that invest in people management register higher average investment returns than their peers, according to a survey from Citi Prime Finance. This concept of “people alpha” is the latest potential differentiator for managers in an industry that is becoming increasingly competitive and institutionalised.   The survey corroborates numerous other academic studies that have shown the connection between superior performance and an investment in an organisation’s people.    “Just as hedge funds once claimed ‘operational alpha’ as a differentiator, we believe that ‘people alpha’ will separate some firms from the pack and will soon become an industry norm,” says
More and more traders are discovering the capital savings they can receive by trading Swap Spreads using a CME-cleared Interest Rate Swap and CME Treasury Futures – a popular example of this is the "Invoice Swap" or "Invoice Spread". These swaps may eliminate a substantial portion of Dodd-Frank margin costs. To find out how to implement this trade and unlock potential savings, read our brief paper on how it works.
The impressive gains made by equity markets this year have left valuations looking fuller than they were 12 months ago, says Dean Turner, Investment Strategist at HSBC Private Bank… Nevertheless, we believe that equities will continue to make progress over coming months, driven by earnings growth that is supported by the recovering global economy.  As the US debt ceiling negotiations reached a positive conclusion last week, investors’ appetite for risk resumed, pushing stockmarkets higher, and driving the S&P 500 index to an all-time high. The recovery of stocks has moved valuations in some markets to within a whisker of their
Guernsey has signed an agreement with the UK on a package of tax measures designed to enhance the automatic tax information exchange provisions already in place between the two jurisdictions. The island’s Chief Minister, Peter Harwood (pictured), signed the Inter-Governmental Agreement (IGA) in London alongside the UK’s Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury, David Gauke.   The current measures have been in existence since 2005, with automatic exchange of information the only option since 2011.   The IGA is similar to the Model I type agreement being negotiated with the US relating to the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA), which
BCS Prime Brokerage has partnered with ARQA Technologies to implement backQRT, ARQA’s automated back-office software.
