Law firm Walkers’ hedge fund team has been named top provider of offshore legal services by readers of Hedgeweek, one of the key publications serving the hedge funds and alternative investment industry.
On 1 March, the magazine announced that its readership had voted Walkers Best Offshore Law Firm in the fourth global Hedgeweek Awards. The honour was based on the results of the publication’s annual survey of nearly 60,000 subscribers, which sought to determine the “best in class” in a range of categories.

Principal Global Investors is to acquire a 55 per cent stake in Liongate Capital Management (Liongate), a global alternative investment boutique based in London and New York focused on managing portfolios of hedge funds.
Founded in 2003, Liongate has approximately USD2.1 billion in assets under management across a range of commingled funds and dedicated client portfolios. Its client base includes many of the world’s leading pension funds, insurance companies and sovereign wealth funds. Dillon Eustace has appointed Derbhil O’Riordan as a partner for its recently established Cayman Islands office.
O’Riordan (pictured) previously worked at the firm’s Dublin headquarters and will continue to work for its hedge funds practice, servicing both Irish and Cayman funds.
O’Riordan joined Dillon Eustace in 2003 and was promoted to partner in 2010. Engaging primarily with the investment fund industry her legal expertise lies in establishing, structuring and ongoing operation of hedge funds, sophisticated Ucits structures and exchange-traded funds. SEI has been selected by Sciens Alternative Investments, part of the Sciens Capital Management Group, to provide operational outsourcing services for the firm’s managed account platform.
Sciens sought to complement its own front-end technology and its newly released risk analytics and portfolio construction tool, SMART, by leveraging SEI’s data management and flexible reporting technologies.
SEI will provide Sciens with a comprehensive suite of operational outsourcing services in a straight-through-processing environment. Additionally, SEI will provide collateral and margin management to support Sciens’ middle office.

As reported by the Financial Times recently, citing data provider Preqin, some 187 “quant” funds launched in 2011. Through the first six months of 2012, that number had already reached 95; the final figure is not yet known as its data normally has a six-month lag but Preqin’s Head of Hedge Funds, Amy Bensted was quoted as saying “We expect 2012 numbers to exceed those of 2011”.
