Aberdeen has appointed Graham Duce and Aidan Kearney as co-heads of multi-manager investments within the group’s alternative investment strategies business.  They will oversee a 40-strong team of investment professionals responsible for Aberdeen’s GBP13.5bn long-only multi-manager and fund of hedge funds portfolios. The decision to unify the teams and investment processes under Duce and Kearney follows the departure of Michiel Timmerman, chief investment officer – multi-manager investments, who joined Aberdeen earlier this year from RBS Asset Management. Hedge fund managers increased their appetite for risk in September following signals that the Federal Reserve will vote to take additional quantitative easing measures when it meets in November, according to hedge fund provider Man.    The move into risky assets such as emerging market equities, FX and commodities led to a positive month’s performance for most hedge funds. Early estimates indicate the Dow Jones Credit Suisse Hedge Fund Index will post its best year-to-date performance in September, gaining 3.23 per cent for the month.  Nine out of the ten sectors posted positive performance as a result of global market rallies. The industry is up 5.78 per cent for the year, outperforming global markets as represented by the Dow Jones Global Index, which have posted gains of 2.89 per cent year-to-date. The Swiss banking group Syz has launched Syz Fund Research, a fund analysis and long only manager selection service. Syz has decided to transform the manager selection unit of its Oyster Funds division into a fully-fledged department. In addition to selecting and monitoring the external managers of its Oyster Funds family, the department will recommend third-party funds to clients of the private bank and to independent asset managers. Syz Fund Research will also be in charge of identifying new investment themes and emerging talent for the creation of new sub-funds and for conducting strategic monitoring of the market.   Syz

Following a slowdown in trading activity from mid-year 2009 to mid-year 2010, US institutions are hopeful about a recovery in equity derivatives trading volumes in 2011, but hardly bullish. Based on an analysis of the amount of commissions paid by US institutions to brokers on trades of options, Greenwich Associates estimates average trading volume in options products declined some 20 per cent from June 2009 to June 2010. Exploiting investment opportunities in the fast growing M&A sector, the Diva Synergy Enhanced Fund led the M&A category for year-to-date performance (Morningstar) and 12 month rolling performance (BarclayHedge).
