Ogier expands into mainland China

Ogier has opened an office in Shanghai as the offshore law firm further expands its worldwide network. The move is at the heart of Ogier’s strategy to provide the most innovative and comprehensive multi-jurisdictional services, through a significant presence in each of the world’s key financial centres and across all time zones.

The new mainland China office will enable Ogier to provide the full range of Ogier’s services to its clients in a manner which is responsive to local conditions and practices.  Ogier is the first offshore law firm to have an office in mainland China and is also the only offshore firm in Asia with lawyers qualified to offer advice on the key offshore jurisdictions of BVI, Cayman, Guernsey and Jersey.  A
 
Ogier Shanghai is headed up by Kristy Calvert who is a native Mandarin and Shanghainese speaker and has extensive corporate and commercial law experience in Asia Pacific, and in particular, China where she was previously Legal Director for Rio Tinto China/Asia.  The main services will include:

Capital Markets (debt and equity initial public offerings): we have considerable experience in advising on listing offshore companies on the HKEx together with pre-IPO restructuring and investment

Mergers and acquisitions and general corporate transactional advice: structuring advice, due diligence and investor protection issues

Banking and finance: lending to groups with offshore companies including taking and enforcing security and opinions

Investment funds: offshore legal advice and associated fiduciary services, including trustee services, corporate administration and directorships to hedge funds, long only funds and private equity funds

Trusts and private wealth: legal advice and trustee services, administration and directorships to trusts, asset holding companies, private trust companies, limited partnerships and foundations used in private wealth structures

Ogier’s Shanghai office will provide mainland Chinese clients with direct access to Ogier’s global network of offices and professional services. Chinese clients will particularly benefit from Ogier’s Hong Kong office.  This 40 person team will provide advice in an effective and timely manner from its close proximity.  Ogier Hong Kong is the fastest growing office in the group and the headcount is forecast to double over the next three years.
