Tabb Group, a London- and New York-based research and advisory firm focused solely on capital markets, has launched the Tabb Derivatives Service, offering access to what it describes as current, in-depth, independent and actionable research and analysis covering business issues and trends in the derivatives trading field.

‘The financial markets are experiencing the highest levels of volatility that we’ve seen in years at the same time as a resurgence of inflation across the global economy,’ says Mike Ross, a partner, vice-president and sales and marketing at Tabb Group.

‘Combined with recent, high-profile losses at many of the largest, most sophisticated financial institutions, plus the complete unwinding of a major bulge-bracket firm, in tandem with explosive growth in the use of derivatives, this has made it clear that our global client base is crying out for help in the derivatives space.’

The Tabb Derivatives Service is billed as the first of its kind worldwide and follows the launch in 2003 of the Tabb Equities Service, which includes annual interview-based studies on global institutional equity trading, hedge funds and traditional institutional asset management.

‘Firms shape their trading strategies based on the depth and accuracy of our intellectual capital,’ Ross says. Tabb’s unique first-person knowledge research methodology developed by founder and chief executive Larry Tabb is the foundation for the published research at the firm.

Ross says the group will bring the same depth and access to the rapidly evolving world of exchange-traded and OTC derivatives that it has with cash equities.

‘Without direct access to the right information at the right time to point your trading operation in the right direction, firms run the risk of placing their portfolios and returns in jeopardy,’ he says. ‘At Tabb Group, we believe that the right information means having access to the right people, the concept behind first-person knowledge.

‘Tabb analysts conduct peer-level conversations with chief executives, chief technical officers, chief investment officers and head traders in order fully to understand how the regulatory, behavioural and structural changes occurring in today’s derivatives market will impact and shape its future.’

Tabb Group’s research effort for derivatives clients will be led by Andy Nybo and Kevin McPartland. The Tabb Derivatives Service has already published Equity Options Trading 2008: Rising Out of Obscurity, a 56-page interview-based study authored by Nybo and McPartland that becomes one of four benchmark studies to be published annually for Tabb Derivatives Service clients.

Founded in 2003, Tabb Group uses the first-person knowledge  methodology developed by Larry Tabb to analyse and quantify the investing value chain linking the fiduciary, investment manager, broker, exchange and custodian.
