Jasjeet Sekhon, a senior figure at Bridgewater Associates, is set to join Google DeepMind as chief strategy officer, marking a high-profile move from the hedge fund industry into artificial intelligence, according to a report by Reuters.
The appointment was announced by DeepMind’s founder Demis Hassabis. Sekhon, who currently serves as chief scientist and head of AI at Bridgewater, will also take on a role on the firm’s board after stepping down from his operational responsibilities.
His departure comes as Alphabet continues to accelerate its push in artificial intelligence, narrowing the gap with competitors such as OpenAI and Anthropic. Over the past year, DeepMind has rolled out a series of new products, including updates to its Gemini AI models, contributing to strong momentum in Alphabet’s share price.
Sekhon joined Bridgewater in 2018 and played a central role in developing its AI capabilities, including the launch of its AIA Labs research and investment unit alongside co-chief investment officer Greg Jensen. While he did not have direct investment responsibilities, he was instrumental in shaping the firm’s AI research agenda.
Bridgewater, led by CEO Nir Bar Dea, has recently reported strong performance, with its flagship Pure Alpha fund delivering significant gains.
