Jun Bei Liu, the manager of one of Australia’s top -performing hedge funds, is set to leave Tribeca Investment Partners to establish her own investment firm after nearly 20 years with the company, according a report by Bloomberg.
Liu, who is based in Sydney, plans to launch a new firm by early 2025, taking with her the AUD1.5 billion ($1bn) long-short strategy she currently manages at Tribeca. While the new venture remains unnamed, Tribeca will continue to provide administrative support.
“I’ll be running the Alpha Plus Fund with the same investment mandate, fee structure, and commitment to performance,” Liu told clients in a note on Monday. “The only difference is that I’ll be operating from a new office, with a hand-picked investment team aligned with my values and expertise.”
Liu has been with Tribeca since 2005, starting as an analyst. She has been the lead portfolio manager for the Alpha Plus Fund, significantly growing its assets under management since taking over in 2019. Under her leadership, the fund has quadrupled in size.
The Alpha Plus Fund has achieved an average annual return of 13% over the past decade, making it the second-best performing hedge fund strategy in Australia, according to data from Zenith Investment Partners.
Liu emphasised that her transition will be smooth and fully supported by Tribeca, especially by her mentor, David Aylward. “This move will be seamless for our stakeholders,” she assured.
