UniSuper allocates AUD500m to New ASX 300 quant hedge fund managed by RQI Investors

Related Topics

UniSuper, one of Australia’s largest superannuation funds, has seeded a new AUD500m hedge fund focused on the ASX 300, partnering with RQI Investors, the quantitative arm of First Sentier Investors, according to a report by Finance News Network.

RQI, which oversees approximately AUD25bn in assets, will deploy its systematic, model-driven approach to identify relative value and directional opportunities across sectors of the Australian equities market. The fund will utilise advanced mathematical models and algorithms, aiming to extract alpha from inefficiencies within the ASX 300 universe.

The launch comes amid renewed market volatility, notably following remarks by US President Donald Trump on 2 April, underscoring the risks inherent in quantitative hedge strategies, even in highly liquid domestic equity markets.

UniSuper’s move signals growing institutional demand for low-correlation, diversifying strategies, as pension funds look to hedge against macro uncertainty while pursuing higher risk-adjusted returns. The allocation aligns with a broader trend of Australian super funds increasing exposure to alternative investments — particularly hedge funds with a proven track record of navigating complex market environments.
