Kempen Capital Management has added to its UK business development team with the appointment of Julie Alexander as a business development director. Alexander brings nearly 18 years of experience to the role. In her previous position, she worked for 12 years as a senior investment consultant for Willis Towers Watson, where she focused predominantly on advising DC and DB schemes. Prior to this, she worked for Coal Pension Trustees Services and Barclays Capital. The Standards Board for Alternative Investments (SBAI) has published a memo on co-investments which was developed by the Standards Board’s Governance Working Group. The Standards Board is the global standard-setting body for the alternative investment industry, providing a collaborative platform for institutional investors and alternative investment managers to standardise and improve industry practices and streamline investor due diligence. It is supported by over 200 alternative investment managers and institutional investors who collectively manage USD4.5 trillion. DASH Financial Technologies, a capital markets technology and execution specialist, has appointed Steven Bonanno as Chief Information Officer. Reporting directly to CEO Peter Maragos, Bonanno will be responsible for DASH’s IT infrastructure and technology platform operations. Bonanno brings over 25 years’ experience working in the equities trading technology industry. Stableton, a European platform for alternative investments, has hired Ethan B Schaerer to lead the firm’s strategic business development, sales and marketing initiatives into the next growth stage. On 1 January 2020, Schaerer will assume the position of Managing Partner alongside Stableton’s co-founders Andreas Bezner (CEO) and Konstantin Heiermann (CFO). The 16-year financial industry veteran joins Stableton from Greentech Capital Advisors. At Greentech Capital (merger with Nomura announced), Schaerer worked closely with its founder, a former Joint Global Head of Investment Banking at UBS, to create the largest global advisory firm that focuses exclusively on sustainable infrastructure, technology, and impact investments.

A recent white paper I read from Willis Towers Watson (Willis) suggests that the level of alpha and the volatility of alpha are at their lowest levels. The paper – Hedge Funds: A New Way – ultimately goes on to make a positive case for why hedge funds remain integral to investors’ portfolios but it is interesting to think, for a moment, as to why alpha levels are so low.
